Orthodontics
Orthodontics is a science that is responsible for the study, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of anomalies in the shape, position, relationship and function of dentomaxillofacial structures; being its practice the art of preventing, diagnosing and correcting its possible alterations and keeping them in an optimal state of health and harmony, through the use and control of different types of forces.
The most common dental problems that orthodontics usually treat are:
- Absence of teeth or leftover teeth.
- Crowded teeth.
- Gap-toothed.
- Maxillary very protruding (what we know as protuido) and very small jaw.
- Jaw very outgoing.
- Protruding teeth (or left).
Types of appliances
The devices used are of two types.
Depending on the age and malposition, they can be fixed or removable appliances.
The removable treatment is the earliest (about 7-8 years), and it helps us to guide the growth of the face and jaws and also to avoid interferences during the change of milk teeth (temporary) to those of adult ( permanent). At this stage, we can take full advantage of the dentofacial orthopedics in order to redirect and stimulate the growth of the jaws.
Types of orthodontics
Fixed orthodontics with metal brackets
The conventional fixed orthodontics is the one that uses brackets and wires in order to correct dental malpositions. It helps us correct the vast majority of orthodontic problems. Orthodontics studies and treats anomalies in the position and structure of the teeth in order to improve chewing, aesthetics, speech and oral health.
